This is the story of me, The Waldorf Hotel, and a pair of boots. The Chosen Ones is a clothing sale of select vintage pieces from various secondhand shops. It was started two years ago in Toronto and runs monthly; this is the first time it has been held in Vancouver. I heard about it on Twitter and made a note to go, but to be honest, it was more of a no because the Waldorf is too far. I’m just like that, a homebody who prefers to keep within the mile.
And then a single tweet changed everything. Victoria Potter (@demiCouture), a local fashion blogger who was at The Chosen Ones, tweeted a photo of a pair of boots. I loved them and.. they were my size! In a flash, I decided it was meant to be, got dressed and zipped down to the Waldorf.
After recent renovations and events, The Waldorf (1489 East Hastings Street) is high on hip. They threw a hugely successful Halloween bash as their grand opening event. I didn’t go (I was playing video games), but it was THE place to be in Vancouver on that night. Don’t feel bad if you missed it. The next fun event is Barcamp, a 24 hour long event which is described as an “ad-hoc, un-conference”. This will be happening November 19-20th. Basically, you bring stuff to make whatever you want, you make it yourself or with others, and then present it. Of course there is more to it! For clarity, it’s probably best that you read the description yourself: Barcamp Vancouver 2010. Get in the know!
Today was the first time that I have ever set foot inside the Waldorf. I saw young, trendy hip people milling about outside and dining inside the restaurant. The management at the Waldorf has done a superb job at revamping and raising the profile of the hotel. Clearly the decor and events are successfully attracting a targeted demographic. Definitely a spot to keep an eye on!

The vintage sale was held downstairs. There were racks of excellent pieces but I couldn’t stay. I was a machine with a mission. As soon as I spotted the boots, I tried them on, paid and left.
This is the talented @demicouture showing and describing the virtues of pieces she handpicked from the racks at The Chosen Ones. So funny and wondrous!!! You must watch it. It will give you an idea of the fabulous, one-of-a-kind pieces out there for you to find, to wear and to cherish. Go forth!

I let my boots check out the Woodward’s view so that they can acclimatize to their new home.
Then I put them on and ran downstairs to the SFU Contemporary Arts building to watch an Ashanti drum performance. I sat in the front row. I have a feeling my chosen ones will be happy with me and I, them. Oh yes I did just say that. But truly, did I not choose them? Or do you wish to say they chose me?
Such a clever title. Go to The Chosen Ones. Find something to cherish.
