Mexico Fest 2010 Opening Events at the Roundhouse

The Mexico Fest 2010 is a ten day celebration of the Mexican Independence bicentennial and revolution centennial. It starts today, September 7th, and runs until the 17th.  A list of all the events in Vancouver can be found at Mexico Fest events page.

Rather than list everything here, I’ve decided to feature events in the neighbourhood. Today’s opening events will be held at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre.  It’s the place to be tonight!

6:00-7:00 PM:  MEMORIAS DE UNA JORNADA

The photography exhibition of veterans from the 1910 Mexican Revolution is by Jon Bertelli, an internationally established photographer who lives in Vancouver, BC.

“In 1997 I was surrounded by good friends, great food and music in the state of Morelos, Mexico when the stories of Legendary Emiliano Zapata and his fearless followers stimulated my curiosity. Next day on my bright orange 1973 VW and armed with a plentiful supply of film I embarked myself on a quest: finding the last Zapatistas to capture their images.”

7:00-9:00 PM: DIEGO, FRIDA, FIESTAS AND REVOLUTION

The Fiestas and Revolution Conference explores the unique life of the renowned artist Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. This event is a special presentation by Dr. Guadalupe Rivera, daughter of Diego Rivera.

Dr. Rivera Marin holds a Masters in Public Administration and a PhD in Law and History from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). She also studied International Relations and Economics. Dr. Rivera has represented Mexico and the Mexican women in diverse international forums. She was Ambassador of Mexico at the United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization (Rome 1978-1979).
